The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission has received demand for 11.8 megahertz of spectrum in 1800 MHz band from three mobile operators.
The telecommunication regulatory commission, however, will place 7.4 MHz of spectrum for auction on March 8.
The commission mentioned the volume of demand placed by the telecom operators in the amended guidelines on assignment of spectrum from 1800 MHz and 2100 MHz bands to cellular mobile phone service operators.
The commission, however, did not mention the names of the operators.
Along with the 7.4 MHz of spectrum in 1800 MHz band, another 15 MHz of spectrum from 2100 MHz band would be placed for auction on March 8, 2021.
The commission would place the 7.4 MHz in five blocks and the 15 MHz in three blocks in the auction.
The base price for each MHz of spectrum from 1800 MHz was set at $31 million for 15 years and the base price would be $27 million for each MHz spectrum from 2100 MHz for 15 years.
As per the guidelines, each mobile phone operators is supposed to submit Tk 100 crore as bid earnest money to the BTRC for participating in the auction of each spectrum band.
The bid earnest money would be adjusted with the fees of spectrums that the operators would purchase at the auction.
BTRC officials said that the assignment of new spectrum to the telecom operators would help them improve the service quality.
The use of low spectrum by the telecom operators in comparison with the number of customers was identified as a major reason for the poor service quality of the operators.
