Journalists on Wednesday held a rally in the capital demanding immediate formation of the ninth wage board for revision of their pay scales.
Addressing the rally, union leaders sought the intervention of prime minister Sheikh Hasina in instituting the ninth wage board for journalists and other employees of newspapers, televisions and online media outlets.
Dhaka Union of Journalists and Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists and other professional bodies of journalists organised the rally.
The wages of journalists has not been revised proportionately to the prices of essentials, the union leaders said.
They also observed that information minister Hasanul Haq Inu had remained unmoved about the journalists’ demand.
The police barricaded the journalists’ procession on Matsha Bhaban crossing as they attempted to march towards the Prime Minister’s Office from the National Press Club.
DUJ faction president Shaban Mahmud, BFUJ faction president Manjurul Ahsan Bulbul, among others, spoke at the rally.
Later, a delegation of journalists submitted a memorandum to the PMO seeking the prime minister’s immediate intervention.
