The Election Commission will start the distribution of smart national identity cards in Rajshahi city on April 2.
The distribution of the machine readable NID cards will be inaugurated at Rajshahi Shilpakala Academy. Election commissioners Md Rafiqul Islam and Kabita Khanam will be present at the inaugural programme, said EC secretary Muhammad Abdullah on Wednesday.
Besides, the distribution of smart NID cards will begin in Barisal city by April 15.
Election commissioner Mahbub Talukdar will be present at the inaugural function there, the EC secretary added.
EC officials said the distribution schedules for all the thanas of the two cities will be published in local newspapers.
Besides, voters can know about the dates and places of their smart card distribution through mobile SMS. One needs to text- SC<space> NID<space>17-digit national ID> - to 105 to know about his or her date and place.
The voters having the 13-digit NID requires to add the year of birth and those who did not get laminated NID cards need to text SC<space>F<space> serial number of voter registration slip<space>D<space> yyyy-mm-dd to 105.
Earlier, the EC started the distribution of the NID cards in Dhaka on October 1 last year, while in Chittagong on March 13 last.
The NID cardholders can avail themselves of 22 types of services, including banking, TIN, driving license and passport.
