Rajuk on Tuesday drew severe criticism from AKM Rahmutullah, MP, and four union parishad chairmen for allowing unplanned development activities in the capital.
They also blasted Rajuk for showing a vast area on the eastern fringe of the capital as the area for water retention in the existing Detailed Area Plan
They asked Rajuk to restore from the illegal occupants 48 natural canals that once passed through the capital and use them as water retention areas.
Speaking at a meeting hosted by Rajuk for eliciting public opinion about a new DAP, now under preparation Rahmutullah asked Rajuk to prepare a realistic DAP for the capital for the next 20 years.
He advised Rajuk’s urban planners to pay field visits to take the opinion of the capital’s inhabitants for preparing the next DAP.
Rajuk hosted the meeting at the MP’s Gulshan office as part of its ongoing participatory rapid appraisal about the DAP, now under preparation.
Rahmatullah blasted Rajuk as a corrupt institution and said its officials neglected planned development of the capital as they were busy with money making.
He said Rajuk’s existing DAP was prepared by urban planners sitting at office.
He pulled up Rajuk for allowing Bashundhara, Navana, Swadesh and other real estate companies to grab low lying areas in lieu of money and permitting them to build and sell housing facilities.
Rahmuttalh, also president of Dhaka north city unit of ruling Awami League said that Rajuk needed to understand that once it restored the 48 canals from the grabbers there would be no need to treat the low lying areas on the fringe of the capital as the areas for water retention.
He also blasted Rajuk for allowing Banashree, Mohanagar, Bashundhara and other private housing facilities without keeping provisions for playgrounds for the children.
Rahmatullah said that had he been a minister he would get the Rajuk officials roped and beaten up by public for allowing such irregularities.
Uttarkhan union parishad chairman Md Kamal Uddin came down heavily on Rajuk for slashing designated playgrounds, parks and other open spaces at Uttara Model Town and letting the use of open spaces for other purposes.
He said that Rajuk allowed the creation of Uttara Club, a ladies’ club and a school by destroying a park at Sector 1of Uttara Model Town.
Kamal said that a playground at Sector 4 of Uttara Model Town was replaced by an English medium school and a number of residential plots.
Beraid UP chairman AM Jahangir Alam demanded water retention areas in his union be released from the DAP to facilitate development activities there.
Satarkul UP chairman Abdul Matin said that if the canals were recovered from the grabbers d there would be no need for keeping water retention areas at Satarkul, Chhoto Beraid and Baro Beraid in the DAP.
Rajuk member for planning Jiaul Hasan, chief town planner Sirajul Islam, DAP project director Md Ashraful Islam and other local public representatives took part in the participation interaction.
DAP project director Ashraf said that the grabbed canals would be shown in the DAP under preparation for possible recovery in the future.
