Bangladesh topped France in terms of detected COVID-19 cases as the country detected 3,027 more patients in the past 24 hours till 8:00am Tuesday taking the total detection to 1,68,645.
So far, 168,335 people have tested positive for the novel coronavirus in France, which reported the first case in January while Bangladesh reported the first three cases on 8 and the first death on March 18.
COVID-19 claimed 55 more lives in Bangladesh in the past 24 hours taking to 2,151 the death toll from the novel coronavirus, Directorate General of Health Services additional director general Nasima Sultana said in the daily online bulletin.
Nasima said that the infection rate in the past 24 hours was 22.98 per cent as 13,173 samples were tested across the country.
The death from COVID-19 increased in the recent days as 1,305 patients died in the past one month.
The daily death from COVID-19 death crossed 50 for the second time in this week as 55 others died of COVID-19 on Sunday.
Earlier, the daily death crossed 50 in Bangladesh on two occasions — 53 on June 16 and 64 on June 30.
Of the deceased, 51.33 per cent were in Dhaka, 25.89 per cent were in Chattogram, 4.97 per cent were in Rajshahi, 4.51 per cent were in Khulna, 4.23 per cent were in Sylhet, 3.63 per cent were in Barishal, 3.02 per cent were in Rangpur and 2.42 per cent were in Mymensingh divisions, Nasima said.
The country is now on the 18th week of infection and has passed 122 days.
The COVID-19 death and infection increased manifold in recent weeks.
In the 17th week, 25,701 people tested positive for COVID-19 and 302 died.
The number of detection and death was 25,203 and 270 in the 16th week, 24,396 and 286 in the 15th week, 21,353 and 293 in the 14th week and 18,418 and 236 in the 13th week.
The country experienced a surge in detection of and death from the 13th week after the government eased restrictions on public movement on May 31.
The detection was 12,530 with 158 deaths in the 12th week, 11,083 with 138 deaths in the 11th week and 7,225 with 100 deaths in the 10th week.
The first spell of surge infection started from the 10th week after the government eased the shutdown, it had imposed to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus, by opening markets, shopping malls and factories.
Before that, 4,980 people tested positive and 29 died in the 9th week while 3,792 tested positive and 35 died in the 8th week.
The government further lifted the restriction on public movement from May 31. Since then the infection rate has remained above 20 per cent.
On Tuesday, 16,873 suspected patients were in isolation and 63,441 were in quarantine.
Besides, 1,953 patients were declared recovered in the past 24 hours. So far, 78,102 patients have been declared recovered.
