Authorities have locked down several houses in the capital’s Mirpur and Basabo as 12 out of 18 people detected positive for coronavirus on Sunday are from Dhaka.
Directorate of Health Services director general M Abul Kalam Azad on an online news conference said they had identified several clusters at Basabo, Tolarbagh, and Mirpur in the capital, places in Narayanganj city, Madaripur and Gaibandha districts and the areas were put under lockdown.
Mirpur division deputy commissioner of police Mostak Ahmed said that so far 40 buildings in Uttar Tolarbagh, few buildings in Shah Ali Bagh, Kalawalapara, Kafrul, Mirpur-11 and Mirpur-13 were put under lockdown.
Police placed a neighbourhood in Dhaka’s Mirpur 1 under lockdown on the day as an elderly couple was tested positive for coronavirus infection, said Mirpur police station officer-in-charge Mostafijur Rahman.
The couple was staying on the second floor of a building located in Shah Ali Bagh and they were taken to Kuwait-Bangladesh Friendship Hospital, said the police officer.
Police have been deployed in the areas and they were asking residents through public address system to stay alert and remain indoors.
Bangladesh has so far recorded nine deaths from coronavirus and 88 cases of infections.
