4 die in Chattogram boat capsize

At least four people, including a child, died when two boats capsized in the Jalbadal canal at Banshkhali in Chattogram on Wednesday.

The deceased were identified as Md Akkas, 28, an expatriate of Oman, Minhaj, 10, Abdul Malek, 50, and Abdul Jalil, 32. All of them are residents of Banskhali.

Banskhali police officer-in-charge Rezaul Karim said that about 20 people were also injured in the accident at about 1:00pm.

Md Babul, 40 and Ali Akbar, 10,—rescued from the boats—were admitted to Banshkhali Health Complex, he said.

He said that two fishing trawlers were carrying 170 people to a religious mehfil at Kutubdia in Cox’s Bazar from Katharia and Khankhanabad in Banskhali.

The trawlers, loaded with four times than their capacities, capsized in the Jolbadar canal and luckily, most of them managed to get to shore, he said.

On February 14, five people died as a tourist boat capsized in the Kaptai lake in Rangamati.
