Preparations for Victory Day Parade almost complete

Over 5,000 personnel of military, paramilitary, police and volunteers are likely to join the Victory Day Parade at the national parade square in the capital on December 16 marking the 44th Victory Day when in 1971 the people triumphed in a war of independence against the Pakistani occupation forces.
All preparations have been completed to make the parade a success, said officials concerned adding that the final rehearsal would be held today at about 10:30am.
Bangladesh army’s nine infantry division general officer commanding Major General Waqar-Uz-Zaman will lead the parade to be attended by 5,141 personnel military, paramilitary, police, volunteers and freedom fighters.
Apart from freedom fighters, different units from Army, Navy, Air Force, Border Guard Bangladesh, Police, Coast Guard and Bangladesh National Cadet Corps, among others, will be joining the march-past. The president and the prime minister are expected to attend the event.
Different ministries will display their activities on carts in the parade ground.
Rapid Action Battalion already set up a control-room and installed close-circuit cameras to keep watch on the huge gathering.
The 9 Infantry Division of Bangladesh army is organising the parade in coordination with the liberation war affair ministry.
Event Touch International already installed banners, festoons and stand displays on Kazi Nazrul Islam Avenue and other places.
International Finance Investment and Commerce Bank is the title sponsor and Bashundhara Group, Walton, Trust Bank and the Islami Bank Bangladesh Limited are co-sponsors of the event.
The Islami Bank is donating Tk 50 lakh for the event, the officials said.
The liberation war affairs minister, AKM Mozammel Haque, told New Age that the ministry usually funded the parade partially and the rest of the fund was usually arranged from different sources.
On December 16, Bangladesh Navy will show naval warships from 2:00pm to 5:15pm at Dhaka’s Sadarghat, Pagla Naval Jetty in Narayanganj, Newmooring Naval Jetty in Chittagong, BIWTA Rocket Jetty in Khulna and BIWTA Jetty in Barisal to mark the day.
