Over 4.9 lakh farmers affected by floods

A total of 4,91,102 farmers have been affected by two recent floods that caused a financial loss of Tk 695.20 crore, according to final estimate of the agriculture ministry.
Net 89,092 hectares of croplands were damaged by the floods in the first phase from August 15 to September 1 and the second phase of the flood from September 22 to October 1, said officials.
The crops including transplant Aman rice, vegetables, chili and betel leaves were badly damaged by the floods, they said.
Agriculture minister Matia Chowdhury on Sunday said the government would provide free agricultural inputs including seeds and fertilizers among 2,05,015 small and marginal farmers as flood rehabilitation and crop incentives.
The agricultural inputs worth of Tk 8.48 crore will be distributed among 86,475 flood affected marginal farmers while crop incentives worth of Tk 15.4 crore will be provided among 1,18,540 farmers in southern districts, she said.
The minister made the announcement at a press conference at agriculture ministry in the secretariat.
The flood affected farmers will get agricultural inputs in 14 districts including Tangail, Mymenshingh, Jamalpur, Sherpur, Netrokona, Sylhet, Sunamganj, Bogra, Sirajganj, Rangpur, Gaibandha, Kurigram, Lalmonirhat and Nilphamari.
Agricultural inputs include seeds of boro rice, wheat, maize, mustard oil, pulses and Diammonium phosphate and Potash fertilizers.
Each flood affected farmer who will grow wheat on his one bigha of land will be entitled to get 20 kg of wheat seeds, 20 kg DAP and 10 kg Potash fertilizers, said the minister.
Against one bigha of land, each farmer will get 4 kg maize seeds while one kg mustard seeds and five kg of boro rice seeds along with equal quantum of DAP and Potash, she said.
About crop incentives in the southern region, Matia said each farmer will be given  20 kg of wheat and four kg of maize along with 20 kg of DAP and 10 kg Potash  fertilizer. Each grower will get eight kg of Kheshari seeds or seven kg of felon pulse seeds along with 10 kg of DAP and five Kg of Potash.
Farmers in Jessore, Narail, Khulna, Bagherhat, Satkhira, Barisal, Pirojpur, Jhalakhati, Patuakhalki, Borguna, Bhola, and Gopalganj will be given the crop incentives, said the agriculture minister.
Replying to a question, the agriculture minister said the government has already started distribution of the agricultural inputs in different places and it would continue ahead of the Robi crop season.
The money for rehabilitation and incentives would be arranged from the national budget, said the minister.
