53,000 fake ID cards seized, 2 arrested

The detectives on Friday night sized more than fifty thousand fake national identification cards and arrested two people in Dhaka and Gazipur.
The arrested were identified as Aminul Islam alias Mamun, 23, and Tawfiqul Islam, 25.
Detectives said that the two were engaged in selling fake ID cards which are used for buying mobile SIM card with false registration.
In a media briefing on Saturday, Dhaka Metropolitan Police joint commissioner (DB) Monirul Islam said the miscreants would buy unregistered SIM cards to run illegal VoIP business.
A total of 53,100 fake national ID cards, 36,300 passport-size colour photos were sized from them, said detectives.
Monirul said a set of ID card and photo is sold to retail SIM sellers for Tk 25-30. The retail SIM sellers sell the set for at least Tk 50 to the customer.
Detectives said the fake SIMs are used in criminal activities.
Police said that the gang was operating for the last one and a half months and they had already sold thousands of fake ID cards.
Monirul said a Kadamtali police team, led by subinspector Krishna Chandra Mitra, held Aminul during a raid around 10:15pm from East Dholaiparh in Dhaka with 4,650 fake ID cards and the same number of passport-size photos. Aminul was retailer and he admitted that he was collecting these fake ID cards form another partner in Tongi.
Following his statement, the detectives raided a house in Tongi’s Arichpur Bazar area and arrested Toufique, who the police claimed was the kingpin of the gang.
Police seized 48,450 fake ID and 31,650 photos from him.
A computer, color printer, 15 Airtel and eight Banglalink SIM cards were also seized.
The High Court on April 1 directed the authorities concerned to immediately deactivate unregistered SIMs issued or sold through dealers of six mobile operators.
A High Court bench gave the order after a preliminary hearing on a petition filed by Supreme Court lawyer JR Khan Robin.
Robin submitted the petition, attaching with it a report published on March 6 in the national Bangla daily with its headline ‘Seven lakh unregistered mobile SIM cards traced’.
The Bangladesh Telecom Regulatory Commission has recently initiated measures to check cell phone-based crimes by banning the sale of pre-activated SIM cards.
