Workers of Tuba Group continue their hunger strike demanding payment of arrears, wage and festival allowance for the sixth consecutive day on Saturday at an apparel unit of the group at North Badda in Dhaka.— Indrajit Ghosh

Tuba Group Sramik Sangram Committee held a protest rally in front of Hossain Market at North Badda in the city on Saturday morning defying police obstacles.
A large contingent of police was deployed in the area where workers of Tuba Group garment factories continued their hunger strike for the sixth straight day for three months’ wage and festival allowance.
Speaking at the rally, politicians, academics and labour leaders gave the government and Tuba Group owners 24 hours to resolve the crisis arising from non-payment of the wages of 1,600 workers.
Communist Party of Bangladesh president Mujahidul Islam Selim warned that the workers would go for a tougher movement if Tuba Group owners failed to pay the wages and festival allowance in 24 hours.
Socialist Party of Bangladesh general secretary Khalequzzaman called on the government and the factory owners to take immediate steps to pay the wages that remained outstanding for four months.
Jahangirnagar University teacher Anu Muhammad said that the factory owners seemed unwilling to pay the wages of the workers and called upon the government to take steps so that the workers dues were cleared without further delay.
Nagarik Oikya convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna urged politicians and civil society members to remain beside the workers until their lawful demand were met.
The rally was addressed, among others, Tuba Group workers’ representative Mohammad Siraj, Democratic Left Alliance coordinator Shubhrangshu Chakrabarty, Saiful Huq, Firoz Ahmed, garment workers’ leaders Mantu Ghosh, Mahbubur Rahman Ismail,  Taslima Akhter Lima, Shabnam Hafiz, Shahidul Islam Sabuj and SKOP leader Razequzzaman Ratan.
A procession brought out after the rally was intercepted by the police.
Democratic Left Alliance leaders at a protest rally in front of the National Press Club, called on the government and factory owners to pay the dues of the Tuba Group workers by midday Sunday or they warned that they would besiege the labour ministry on Monday morning.
Shubhangshu Chakrabarty, Zonayed Saki and Shaidul Islam Sabuj addressed the rally which was followed by a protest procession.
Chhatra Oikya Forum, the student front of Democratic Revolutionary Party,   also held a protest rally at the same venue, demanding immediate resolution of the crisis of the Tuba Group.
Sarker Al Emran, Sarker Al Fokran and Arnika Tasmin spoke at the rally.
