At least 11 people were killed and over 50 others were injured when Khulna-bound Simanta Express train rammed into a bus carrying bridal party at an unmanned level-crossing at Barobazar under Kaliganj in Jhenaidah early Friday.
Kaliganj police sub-inspector Akimul Islam said the bus was travelling to Phulahari in Sailkupa from Sako Mathanpur after a wedding ceremony.
The train rammed into the bus at about 3:40am when it reached Barobazar and pushed it along the railway for half a kilometre, leaving eight dead on the spot.
Two died from their injuries at Kaliaganj upazila health complex and Faridpur Medical College and Hospital.
The injured were taken to Jhenaidah General Hospital and Jessore Medical College and Hospital in critical conditions, the sub-inspector said.
Seven of the dead who could be identified were Sudhir Kumar Biswas, 40, Biplab Biswas, 25, Shovon De, 25, Kowshik, 8, Oishi, 7, Banya Rani, 65 and Trisna Rani, 24. They are all from Phulahari. Sujoy, 31, died at Jessore General Hospital during treatment in the afternoon.
Jhenaidah deputy commissioner Safiqul Islam, additional superintendent of police Mohammad Hasanuzzaman, local lawmaker Anwarul Azim Anar, among others, visited the spot.
The railway police arrested a guard, Momin, for negligence of duty.
Two inquiry committees were formed by the relevant authorities
Train communications to and from Khulna resumed after a few hours of disruption.
