The cabinet on Monday approved in principle the draft ‘Bangladesh EPZ Labour Bill 2014’, allowing the workers to form welfare association.
‘The draft of EPZ labour law has been framed in line with existing labour law and EPZ workers’ welfare association and industrial relations law,’ cabinet secretary Mohammad Musharraf Hossain Bhuiyan said at a press briefing after the cabinet meeting.
He said the workers in the EPZ still will remain outside the jurisdiction of the country’s labour law.
The EPZ labourers will now have the right to form workers’ welfare association with a bargaining capacity, Musharraf pointed out.
The Bill is an outcome of hectic discussions between the government and the investors who did not want a true trade unionism in the special economic zones, it is learnt.
Prime minister Sheikh Hasina chaired the meeting at the secretariat.
