The National Committee to Protect Oil, Gas, Mineral Resources, Power and Ports on Saturday called on the government to hold a referendum to take people’s opinion about the coal-based thermal power plant at Rampal in Bagerhat.
Majority of the people would reject the implementation of the power plant, said Anu Muhammad, member secretary of the national committee.
He was speaking at a press conference held at the office of Communist Party of Bangladesh in the city.
Bangladesh-India Friendship Power Company on July 12 signed a $1.49 billion contract with an Indian company to construct a coal-fired power plant near the Sunderbans, the world’s largest mangrove forest.
Under the contract, Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited will construct a 1,320MW coal-fired power plant at Rampal by 2019.
Anu Muhammad said the controversial went against the national interests.
The committee, however, announced a series of programmes to compel the government to drop the project.
It would hold countrywide demonstration on July 18. They would hold march in the capital from July 19 to 25. It would march finally towards the Prime Minister’s Office on July 28, starting from in front of the National Press Club at 11:00am.
Anu Muhammad said the national committee would continue its gradual tougher programmes until the government refrain from implementing the power plant as it would destroy the Sunderbans.
Kallol Mustafa, leader of the committee held a power point show on the negative impacts of the power plant on the Sunderbans and the nature of the area.
Leaders of the national committee, Haider Akbar Khan Rano, Dhaka University teacher Moshahida Sultana, Abdus Salam, Saiful Huq, Mosharraf Hossain Nannu, Abdus Satter, Bazlur Rashid Firoz, Jahangir Alam Fazlu, Shahidul Islam Sabuj, Khan Asaduzzaman Masum and others attended the press conference.
