Law to impeach SC judges a naked aggression of govt

Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Thursday said that war crimes allegation against BNP chairperson’s advisory council member, Osman Faruk, was ‘funny’ and that it was a covert ‘directive’ by the government to stop his voices at home and abroad.
BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi at a news briefing at the party central office made the remark a day after war crimes investigation agency on Wednesday had said that they were primarily investigating into an allegation of war crimes against the BNP leader.
He said such a ‘hated conspiracy’ is being brewed to cause mental harm and undermine Osman Faruk.
On behalf of BNP, Rizvi strongly condemned what he said the ‘government’s conspiracy.’
The BNP senior joint secretary general came down hard on the government’s move for hurriedly enacting a new law in the parliament, empowering the House to remove or impeach judges of the Supreme Court, replacing the Supreme Judicial Council.
He said BNP thinks that such a law is meant for controlling the SC judges fully and unleashing executive branch’s ‘naked aggression’ on judiciary.
It would obstruct independent judicial function and people would be deprived of justice, Rizvi feared.
The BNP leader said this law is also intimidating so that the judges bow to the wishes of the government while performing.
The government will use the law to further suppress the opposition parties with cruelty, control mass media and snatch away rights recognised in a democracy, he said.
He condemned the government’s ‘hated step’ and asked to retreat from passage of the law against people’s interest.
Rizvi was also critical of the government’s move to further control mass-media.
He referred to information minister Hasanul Huq Inu who told the House on Wednesday that a decision was made to form a media monitoring cell to ‘widely control mass media’ and said BNP condemns and protests against
the government’s ‘ill attempts.’
