Protesters in Comilla city are demonstrating for a third day about the alleged gang rape and murder of college student Sohagi Jahan Tonu at Comilla cantonment area.
Several thousand people, mostly students, surge downtown Kandirpar blocking all kinds of communications and continued demonstration demanding immediate arrest and trial of the killers and rapists.
The agitating protesters started their demonstration around 10:00am and continued till 11:00am.
They also reminded the authorities concerned about their 72-hour ultimatum they issued on Wednesday, otherwise, threatened to bring the city to standstill.
Comilla additional police superintendent Imtiaz Ahmed and Kotwali police officer-in-charge Abdul Rouf rushed to spot and reassured the demonstrators that the culprits must be arrested within the deadline.
Later, the protesters moved to the office of the deputy commissioner.
The protesters on Wednesday had blocked Dhaka-Chittagong highway and on Tuesday formed a huge human chain at Victoria College.
Meanwhile, the students of Jagannath University in Dhaka and Islamic University in Kushtia formed human chains on the university campuses today protesting the murder of Tonu after rape.
The Samajtantrik Chhatra Front also formed a human chain in front of National Press Club in the capital protesting at the gruesome murder.
At Rajshahi University students formed a human chain on the campus demanding the immediate arrest and punishment of the rapists and killers of Tonu.
Earlier, police recovered the body of Sohagi Jahan Tonu, a second-year student and activist of Comilla Victoria College Theatre, from Alipur area in Comilla cantonment on Sunday night.
Post-mortem examination report said she was killed after rape.
The victim’s family said Tonu used to do tuition for maintain expenses of her study. She went to one of her student’s house at Alipur on Sunday afternoon and did not return home till police recovered her body from a bush.
Yar Hossain, father of the victim, filed a murder case with Kotwali police station on Monday and there was no arrest till Thursday.
