Mahfuz Anam faces arrest warrant

13 more cases filed against him

A Narayanganj court issued a warrant for the arrest of the Daily Star editor Mahfuz Anam in a defamation case while 13 more cases – nine on defamation and four on sedition charge – were filed in 11 districts against him on Tuesday.
Leaders of the ruling Awami League and its associate bodies filed the cases for publishing reports on allegations of corruption against prime minister Sheikh Hasina supplied by a military intelligence during the military-controlled interim regime in 2007-08.
The new cases took to 42 the number of defamation and sedition cases filed against Mahfuz since February 9.
The complaints alleged that Mahfuz ran ‘false and distorted’ stories in his English daily in an effort to efface Hasina, also the Awami League president, from politics.
Numerous graft cases were filed against politicians during the 2007-08 military-backed emergency regime, the complainants stated.
In a television talk-show on February 3, Mahfuz admitted his ‘big mistake’ by running uncorroborated stories fed by a military intelligence.
In Narayanganj, senior judicial magistrate Saiduzzaman Sharif issued a warrant for the arrest of Mahfuz in a Tk 10 crore defamation case filed district bar association joint secretary Mohsin Mia.
New Age correspondent in Sylhet reported that Habiganj district Krishak League general secretary Mukter Hossain Benu filed a sedition case with senior judicial magistrate’s court and Sunamganj Chhatra League organising secretary Faruk Ahmad Sujan filed a Tk 100 crore defamation case with a judicial magistrate’s court against Mahfuz.
New Age correspondent in Jessore reported that Chaugachha upazila AL former president Shahajan Kabir filed a Tk 10 crore defamation case with a senior judicial magistrate’s court while Jessore district Chattra League general secretary Anwar Hossain Bipul filed a sedition case against Mahfuz with additional chief judicial magistrate’s court.
New Age correspondent in Barisal reported that assistant public prosecutors Rafikul Islam Khokon and Kaium Khan Kaisar filed two defamation cases with two Barisal courts.
New Age correspondent in Sherpur reported that a sedition case was filed against Mahfuz with the chief judicial magistrate’s court by former district Chhatra League president Md Anowerul Hasan Utpal.
In Bagerhat, district Chhatra League president Md Monir Hossain filed a defamation case with a sinior judicial magistrate’s court against Mahfuz.
In Satkhira, assistant public prosecutor Sahedur Rahman lodged a sedition case against Mahfuz with Satkhira additional chief judicial magistrate’s court.
In Manikganj, district AL former joint general secretary Badrul Islam Khan lodged a defamation case against Mahfuz with Manikganj senior judicial magistrate’s court.
In Lalmonirhat, district swechchhasebak League general secretary Shariful Islam lodged a defamation case against Mahfuz with a senior judicial magistrate’s court.
In Jhalakati, a freedom fighter’s son Boni Amin lodged a defamation case with senior judicial magistrate’s court against Mahfuz.
