Bangladesh got a mixed result on the opening day of the 12th South Asian Games as women’s football team suffered a 0-3 defeat to Nepal while men’s volleyball team managed a 3-2 set win over Afghanistan on Friday.
Only three disciplines among 23 took place on the first day of the 12-day long meet, which is being jointly hosted by the Northeast Indian cities of Guwahati and Shillong.
The Games kicked-off with women’s football at the JLN Stadium in Shillong, where Bangladesh women’s football team failed to offer any challenge to last edition’s runners-up Nepal in their first match.
Dipa Adhikari gave Nepal a lead in the very second minute before Anu Lama doubled the margin in the 17th minute.
Niru Thapa completed the rout in the closing minutes of the second half.
According to Bangladesh team’s media release, the women’s team suffered the defeat only because of their keeper Sabina Akhter’s silly mistakes. Bangladesh will face defending champions India in their second match on Sunday.
Guwahati, the other host city, provided Bangladesh few moments of joy when the men’s volleyball team beat Afghanistan by 3-2 sets at the Nabin Ch Bordoloi AC Indoor Stadium.
Bangladesh will take on Pakistan in their second match today.
Bangladeshi archers also started their campaign at the JLN Sports Complex Polo Ground in Shillong on Friday.
Bangladeshi athletes will compete in eight different disciplines today including 11 swimmers fighting for nine gold medals in the pool.
Both men’s and women’s swimming teams of Bangladesh will participate in the 4X100m freestyle relays.
Men’ team is comprised of Mahfizur Rahman Sagar, Mohammad Anik Islam, Asif Reza and Kamal Hossain.
Sagar will also participate in the 200m freestyle event while Kamal will take part in the 200m breaststroke event.
The women’s relay team for the 4X100m event is comprised of Sabura Khatun, Nazma Khatun, Sharmin Sultana and Sonia Akhter.
Nazma and Sonia will also take part in the 200m freestyle and 100m breaststroke event while Romana Akhter will take the pool in the 200m breaststroke event and Papia Khatun will participate in the 100m butterfly event.
Weightlifters will also begin their campaign from today when Jahura Akter Reshma and Molla Sabira will participate in the 48 and 53kg categories respectively.
In the men’s weightlifting, Mizanur Rahman and Mostain Billa will take part in the 56 and 62kg categories on the same day.
Beside, Bangladesh’s five wrestlers will also start their competitions today while four squash players will take part in the men’s singles first round.
Both Bangladesh men’s and women’s Kho-kho team will play their opening matches against Pakistan while cyclists and shuttlers will also start their campaign.
