Unidentified attackers killed a publisher of slain writer Avijit Roy and hacked another one along with two other writers storming into the offices of the publishing houses at Shahbagh and Lalmatia in Dhaka on Saturday.
Faisal Arefin Dipan, publisher of Jagriti Prakashani, was hacked to death in his office on the second floor of Aziz Super Market in the afternoon, hours after the attack on another publisher of Avijit, Ahmedur Rashid Tutul, at Lalmatia.
Dhaka Metropolitan police Ramna zone assistant commissioner Shibli Noman told New Age that Faisal was hacked to death in his office.
Police cordoned off the area and took the body to hospital.
Faisal’s father, Abul Kasem Fazlul Huq, a supernumerary professor of Dhaka University, said as Faisal was not picking up his phone he rushed to the office and came to know that he has been killed. ‘I am sure that Faisal has been killed for publishing Avijit’s books,’ he said in a emotion choked voice.

Earlier Shuddhaswar publisher Ahmedur Rashid Tutul, writer and blogger Ranadipam Basu and Tareq Rahim were hacked when they were having chat at Shuddhaswar’s office at block C of Lalmatia at around 2:30pm.
The neighbours said they also heard gunshots. Locals rushed the three to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Condition of Tutul and Tareque is stated to be critical. Shuddhaswar had published a number of books of Avijit Roy.
On information Mohammadpur police rushed the spot . Tutul had filed a general diary with Mohammadpur police in February this year after assailants that threatened him to kill after killing of Avijit Roy.
Witnesses said the attackers had locked up the office keeping three injured inside. Later, locals rescued them breaking open the door at their scream.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police Tejgaon division deputy commissioner Biplob Kumar Sarkar quoting the office staff said a man first entered the office claiming that he had come from Sylhet to buy books. Then another one entered carrying a rook-sack and brought machete and firearm and began stabbing the three indiscriminately and shot at one of them, he said. A bullet shell and a live bullet was found from the spot.
