The draw of the maiden Sheikh Kamal International Club Cup tournament was held on Monday with hosts Chittagong Abahani were drawn with Abahani Limited in Group-B.
The eight-team tournament, organised by Chittagong Abahani, is scheduled to be held from October 20-30 at the MA Aziz Stadium in Chittagong, where three local clubs along with five foreign teams will vie for the title.
In Group-A, Dhaka Mohammedan Sporting Club were pitted against Kolkata Mohammedan, De Spinghar Bazan Club of Afghanistan and Solid FC of Sri Lanka.
The other two clubs of Group-B are Kolkata giants — East Bengal and Pakistani league champions Karachi Electric Football Club.
Bangladesh Football Federation president Kazi Salahuddin expressed his joy to see a premier league outfit taking such an exemplary initiative of holding a tournament outside the capital.
‘I am really very happy with Chittagong Abahani for taking such a great initiative of holding the tournament in the name of Sheikh Kamal,’ said Salahuddin at a city hotel on Monday.
‘Not only Chittagong, the whole nation is attached with the tournament. We will provide all kinds of assistances to make this tournament successful.’
AZM Nasir Uddin, the chairman of the tournament committee and Mayor of Chittagong City Corporation, believes that the people of Bangladesh are still passionate about football.
‘I strongly believe that football still is the most popular game in this country though we see only a little number of fans go to the stadium to enjoy the game,’ Nasir said.
‘We have realised that to develop the game we have to set something new and I think this tournament will help to bring back the fans to the stadium.’
Shamsul Haque Chowdhury, the secretary general of Chittagong Abahani announced they will organise the tournament every year.
Tarafdar Ruhul Amin, chief coordinator of the tournament and managing director of title sponsor Saif Power Tec Limited said, like cricket, we are going to bring a new dimension with this tournament by providing prize money to the winning teams and man-of-the-matches.
‘The champions of the tournament will receive $ 25,000 while the runners-up will get $ 10, 000,’ said Amin.
‘We want to bring some new dimension by providing $1,000 for the winning team in every match.’
‘To return to the glory of the past, we will provide one motor cycle per day for the fans by raffle draw. I think such initiatives will boost the interest of the fans.’
Hosts Chittagong Abahani will provide Tk five lakh to each participating teams and bear their all kinds of expenses during the tournament.
