The Bangladesh Football Federation on Friday confirmed the appointment of former Barcelona right back Gonzalo Sanchez Moreno as the national youth academy development coach for a period of six months.
The Spaniard is likely to sign the contract with the BFF on Sunday.
BFF president Kazi Salahuddin said they will monitor Moreno’s performance for the next six months before appointing him permanently.
‘His knowledge on youth academy is very sound,’ Salahuddin told reporters after a one-hour discussion with Moreno, who joined Barcelona youth academy at the age of eight.
‘His first job will be holding 70 training sessions for two-and-a-half month with the players from U-16 and U-19 teams. After that we will understand his caliber. Then we will decide what steps we will take about him.’
Though Salahuddin appeared unimpressed with his coaching experience, he was at least convinced with experience at world’s best football academy, known as the La Masia.
‘I am not impressed with his coaching career,’ said the BFF president. ‘But I showed my interest because he started playing football at the age of eight at Barcelona Academy. He played with the big
stars and knows the procedure of the youth development.’
Salahuddin also said that they are looking for another coach for the academy beside the services of Moreno.
Moreno said that his playing experiences with stars like Portuguese star Luis Figo and current Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola will help him develop Bangladesh’s football.
‘Johan Cruyff was my teacher and I also played with Figo, Guardiola and Carles Puyol,’ said the UEFA A licensed coach Moreno.
‘I will now work with U-19 team from October 15 maybe for six months. After that I don’t know what will happen.
‘I worked with Madagascar U-17 team and also worked with Madagascar senior team for two months. I coached U-17 team in a U-20 tournament in South Africa.’
