Man held for issuing death threats to Habiganj MP, Sylhet DIG

Police on Wednesday arrested a man for issuing death threats to the ruling Awami League lawmaker of Habiganj-3, Abu Zahid and deputy inspector general of police in Sylhet, Mizanur Rahman, on September 16.
The arrested was identified as Karanyak Sarker, 38, son of Baneshwar Sarker of Baro Ujirpur in Baniachang, the police said.
A detective team of Habiganj district police detained Karanyak from Garning Park area in the district headquarters in the noon, police said.
Habiganj police superintendent Joydev Kumar Bhandra confirmed New Age the arrest of Aranyak on charge of issuing death threats.
The SP said Karanyak admitted in the police interrogation that he bought a subscriber identification module of a mobile phone, which was registered in the name of his neighbour Dhananjoy, from a customer care centre of the private mobile phone operator, Grameenphone.
The SP said Karanyak lied before the customer care centre that his SIM was lost and bought a new one without providing any documents as required by law.
He then issued the death threats to the lawmaker and the police DIG using the SIM.  However, the true owner of the SIM found his number was blocked for some unknown reasons.
Karanyak admitted that he made calls and sent messages from that SIM to put Dhananjoy in trouble out of an enmity between the two families, the police superintendent said.
Following the information extracted from Dhananjoy, Habiganj police arrested mobile phone SIM seller Borhan Uddin Rumon and Mizanur Rahman from the district headquarter for their suspected involvement in the issuance of threats.
Habiganj police superintendent Joydev said legal steps were underway against the customer care centre from where Karanyak had purchased the SIM card, without proper documents.
