2 dead as JL men attack cattle market

Two people were shot dead and five were injured as activists of Juba League, the ruling Awami League-backed youth organisation, opened fire at a cattle market at Sandwip upazila in Chittagong on Monday.
The deceased Jahangir Alam, 40, and Kabir Hossain, 45, both were low-income people of the area.
Witnesses said that riding on motorcycles, local Juba League leader Fazle Elahi Mishu along with some 12 people entered the cattle market in Baten Market area at about 5:00pm.
They searched for the lease holder of the cattle market, Moktar Hossain. As Moktar was not present, they opened fire and fled the scene taking away Tk 50,000 from the cash box of the lease holder, the witnesses said.
Jahangir and Kabir fall in the line of fire and died on the spot. Identity of the injured could not be established immediately.
The functioning of the cattle market was stopped after the incident.
Police and local people said that both the lease holder and the attackers belonged to the ruling Awami League.
The Chittagong superintendent of police, AKM Hafiz Akhter, said that local Juba League leader Mishu launched the attack as a sequel to a feud over the lease of the market.
The lease of the market was taken by supporter of Sandwip municipal mayor Zafarullah Titu. Mishu demanded extortion of Tk 1 lakh to the lease holder as Mishu failed to take lease of the cattle market, Hafiz said.
Kabir, a footpath cosmetic vendor was shot dead while he was crossing the area and Jahangir, also a day labour, was a supporter of Zafar group, local people said.
Sandwip police station officer-in-charge Moshiur Rahman said that incident took place for establishing control over the Eid cattle market
Police were conducting drives to arrest the perpetrators, he said.
