23 Zakat cloth seekers killed in Mymensingh stampede

Mymensing-municipality-pourasavaAt least 23 people were killed and nearly 50 others injured in a stampede as they crowded for receiving Zakat clothes near Mymensingh municipality office early Friday.
Senior assistant police superintendent of the district, Abdur Rashid, told New Age that they identified 16 bodies and handed over them to their family members while others remained unidentified.
‘We came to know that few other bodies were taken by their family members. We sent patrol police to verify the news,’ he added.
Police said that the incident took place around 5:00am when a large crowd of people, mostly women, gathered there to collect Zakat clothes being distributed by ‘Nurani Jarda Factory’ owned by Nurani Talukder alias Shamim.
All the deceased were trampled underfoot in the crowd while collecting Zakat clothes and died on the spot and at local hospital, said, Quamrul Islam, the officer-in-charge of Kotwali police station.
Police arrested eight people, including Nurani Talukdar, in this connection.
Meanwhile, police headquarters formed a 3-member probe committee to investigate the stampede incident, United News of Bangladesh reports.
The committee headed by additional DIG Dhaka range Shafiqul Islam was asked to submit its report within five working days, said AIG (media) police headquarters Nazrul Islam.
The prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, expressed deep shock at the deaths of the people in stampede in Mymensingh.
In a condolence message, the prime minister prayed for eternal peace of the departed souls and conveyed profound sympathy to the bereaved family members.
Meanwhile, inspector general of police, AKM Shahidul Hoque, requested people who were willing to distribute charity clothes or Zakat to inform police or to take police assistance to avoid any unwanted accident.
‘We already instructed police officials concerned to provide support to this end,’ the police chief told New Age.
