Apparel workers demonstrate at Savar

About 1,000 workers of two apparel factories at Ashulia, on the outskirts of the capital, on Saturday demonstrated in Savar bus stand area for their five-point demands.
The workers of NRN Knitting and Garments Ltd at Zamgara and Natural Sweater Village Ltd-2 at Aamtala of Ashulia formed a human chain, rallied and demonstrated on Dhaka-Aricha highway at Savar.
Garment Workers Trade Union Centre organised the protests.
The workers brought out a procession that marched from Rana Plaza to Pakiza crossing at Savar after a human chain.
NRN Knitting and Garments Ltd workers said that workers went out of the factory fearing building collapse during the recent earth quack and the management of the six-storied factory terminated two of the workers following the incident on April 30.
The workers on May 02, demonstrated and observed work stoppage protesting against the termination of their colleagues, said Shilpi Khatun, a worker of the factory.
Md Al-Mamun, another worker of the factory, said that the management on May 03 closed the factory for indefinite but next day they opened the factory and again terminated 27 workers.
Factory production manager Md Sarwar Hosen said, ‘The management also thinking about terminating more workers but still I have no information.’
Natural Sweater Village Ltd-2 workers demanded resumption of production of the factory, saying that the management shut the unit suddenly without paying their benefit.
Factory production manager Shahadat Hosen said that the management had to close the factory due to shortage of work-orders.
‘The workers will be paid according to the law,’ he said.
Ashulia industrial police Md Mostafizur Rahman said that additional policemen were deployed at the factories. The management and the workers were called for settling the issues, he said.
